But Steve is right in that it is so necessary to your mental health as a teacher. When I switched from trying to convince my students to behave to using a system that rewards students for behaving after clearly defining what "behaving" means, I found I was able to insulate my actions from my ego. When a student didn't follow directions, I gave them a mark and moved on. It wasn't an argument. If the kid wanted to argue, I'd just say, "Hey, it's just a mark. No big deal." And, in fact, the simple act of the student wanting to argue about the mark meant they had bought in to my system. Hope this helps.
