    To take the argue-avoidance a step further, when I have a student who
    hasn't followed directions, I enforce my consequence and restate my
    directions. If they try to argue that they don't understand why they
    have to blah de blah, I say, just stay after class for a moment and I'll
    gladly explain. They never do.

    Another good one is when the student says, "I'm gonna tell my mom what's
    happening here." I reply very calmly, "I would love the chance to speak
    with your mother about the behavior we're experiencing in the classroom.
    Have her contact me with a good time to get together." Again, never
    happens.
