They can't very well claim that they didn't know. I do not score everything. I mark that it is done, but that is all. This makes sense because, as I tell the kids, most homework is practice. You aren't scored on basketball practice. You are scored on the game (exam). A colleague of mine does collect every assignment, but she then grades only 2 random problems from each assignment. This gives them an added incentive to do it. If they are not paying attention, that really is your problem. A child whose mind is wandering is one thing. A child who is talking and doesn't hear your instruction is another. Expect better behavior and you'll get it. Tom has a lot of details on his post, so I've tried to avoid duplicating what he said.
