I've been using journals this year. Things that are practice
are done in the journal, and then I do a check-up on the
journal every couple of weeks. The slick part is that the
    kids check each other's journals--it's a "completeness"
check. They keep a contents page, and each page needs to be
numbered and also have a date and title. Then I pick a
random selection of 5-10 lines to be copied.

When I have this problem, I'll collect papers at the end of
class for a couple of days and go through the papers, one by
one, calling the name on the paper. The students stand as I
call their name--any students left sitting are then fully
aware they didn't turn in the work.
