    Dear Zodea,

I teach 7th grade English and as you can imagine, I cannot
possibly read and grade everything they do. My solution is
to mix it up. Sometimes while the students work on a "Do
now" activity I circulate the room and check that it is
done. It is usually very easy to see the level of completion
and accuracy with just a quick glance. Other times I collect
it for a homwork grade. In the beginning of the year I
distribute a homework rubric. The rubric grades are check
plus, check, and check minus. This system makes it fairly
easy to assign a grade. Lastly, sometimes I let them know
that an assignment is pass/fail. For instance, I wanted them
to write a poem for National Poetry Month to read to the
class and display in the classroom. However, I didn't want
to collect and assign a letter grade to them. So I utilized
the pass/fail. If they completed the assignment, they
passed. If not, they failed. They seemed to like it.
Regarding kids claiming they didn't know it needed to be
handed in, I NEVER allow them to just come up and place
something in a pile. Inevitably, someone will lie and say
they handed it in and lost it and you cannot prove
otherwise. Kids need to submit work directly to me and check
it off in my gradebook as handed in, or I go around the room
and collect it and make a list of name of students that
didn't have it ready to submit to me. I hope this helps.
