Re: the way kids treat each other
Posted by Darren Barkett on 4/21/08

    Good advice there.

    My two cents...

I categorize expected behavior into five groups. Disrespect is
one of them. At the beginning of the year, I teach the students
what this disrespect can look like; kicking books, teasing or
harassing other students, cussing, putting a student down, etc.
When the girl disrespected the other student, I would have said
calmly, "That's a mark for disrespect." And then moved on.
When the student cussed, same response, and then move on. We,
as a class, would have generated some sort of reward for the end
of the week. Students with too many marks don't get the reward.
Typically less than 5% of the students don't get the reward.

Office referrals really aren't so effective for several reasons.
Try to develop a system that doesn't rely on office referrals
and encourages students to become responsible for their own
    decisions and behavior.

    Hope that helps...

    Darren
