Re: How do we stop negativity in the classroom?
Posted by MathMommy on 5/05/08

In response to your questions and suggestions: I teach 9-12
in small town/rural Oklahoma - a small school with roughly 200
students - my largest class is 21 students and my smallest is
    5. Most are not college bound. Many are kids of faith - this
is the Bible belt after all. As I think about the kids in my
classes, I would say at least a third of my students are
negativity incarnate - and they are extremely vocal about
their dislikes and disputes and dis in general. We have a
very high Native American population - and those kids who are
being raised in Native American homes with Native American
ways are very quiet, respectful, hard working - and are not
negative. It is the "white" kids (who may or may not share
some small amount of that Native American blood) that are the
most negative - and it is primarily the GIRLS. Life is being
handed to these girls on a silver platter - they have no jobs
(most of my students are 9th graders so are still too young to
work) and thus have no means of income, yet they have
perfectly cut and colored hair, go to the tanner, get their
manicures and pedicures, have their cell phones, clothes,
accessories -- it seems that the more they have given to them
by their parents, the more negative they are about
    everything. Go figure??!!

I will try using a catch phrase to get them off the negativity
track. And I really like the idea of having them say two
positive things for every one negative to offset the negative
vibes in the classroom. Thanks to all of you who responded
    with insight and encouragement!
