What if you kept a running tally on the amount of negative comments that are said during class? Tell the students that their goal is to try to have less negative comments than the day before. Leave the lowest tally on the board so the students know how many can't be exceeded. Maybe some of them will bite their tongue because they don't want to mess up the goal! You can establish rewards as well as consequeces to go along with this goal. Hopefully the complaining will stop because they are so used to not complaining anymore!
