Re: To Darrren about "just kidding"
Posted by Darren on 5/05/08

I give my students a bunch of examples of how mean they can be
to each other and then make it "all good" by saying "just
    kidding."

Like, "That shirt is the ugliest shirt I've ever seen!" Laugh
laugh. "Just kidding." "No, really, that shirt is ugly. No,
I'm just kidding you. Whew! I'm not sure I've seen a shirt
that ugly before. Just kidding! Really, I'm just kidding."
I go on and on with that until the class is rolling. Then, as
the year progresses, whenever I hear someone say "Just
kidding" I call them on it. "Just kidding? Just kidding!
    Don't kid!"

We also talk about why people put each other down. My middle
schoolers totally get the idea that people who feel bad inside
try to make themselves feel better by making others feel
worse. I think this level of understanding and awareness can
help many classes refrain from getting so negative.

Thanks for asking! What do others do to fight this battle?
