Last year I taught Kindergarten. I had a boy who joined the
class mid-fall who was challenging in that he argued with
whatever I said, usually starting with "My Dad says". He
was loud, ill mannered, and not used to not getting his
way. As the year progressed, he improved and began to 'get
into the groove' of school and my classroom. While he was
not a 'model student', he was a good kid who made a good
effort.
This year he is in Grade 1. I teach music to the Gr 1
students. I have never had problems engaging students and
getting them to participate and be positive in class. This
group is my former kindergarten class, and they are even
more receptive than other classes...except for this one
boy.
He does small, subtle things to 'disobey' my instructions,
such as not singing when we sing together. He rolls his
eyes, sings with a silly voice, scoots his chair around,
while we are singing songs and playing games. At times he
is distracting to the others, and he is always distracting
to me.
I have spoken to him privately, taken away small privleges
(sp?), and given him a detention. I've spoken to the
classroom teacher about his behavior. She just shrugs and
says that's the way he is. (And that is a whole other
kettle of fish -- this teacher can't stand me and doesn't
give me the time of day).
Any suggestions about how I can effectively deal with this
boy? I have never had a student who reacts to me quite like
him, and I don't know how to really get him to respond to
me in a positive manner. Ideas? Advice? I'd appreciate
anything!
