I am a first year Jr High teacher at a rural district in West Texas and will be teaching 8th grade US History. I totally understand about getting kids quiet especially at the middle school level. Here is a link you might find useful in managing your class. www.kaganonline.com Our district just held a 2 day training on Cooperative Learning and included were techniques on how to manage classroom behavior. When you get to the site, look up "High Five" which is a great way to get student's attention.
