Post: First Day Report
Posted by DL on 8/18/08
Well, I started school today. Most of the classes went
well, especially the sixth graders. I went over classroom
expectations and went over my attention signal (high five),
which I practiced with them a few times. We went over
entering and leaving the classroom.
The only problem I anticipate is with my returning band
students. I really struggled with my first period (8th
graders), because they are used to a more pushover version
of me. They would not shut up, and I kept raising my hand
over and over again. They would raise their hands, but 5
seconds after I put it down, someone would start talking. I
didn't have time to go over the entire discipline system,
because homeroom went longer than normal, so I really
couldn't enforce anything yet. I only had about 20 minutes
with them. The ironic thing is that most of those kids are
in the honors program, but all the teachers have complained
about their talking. The regular returning kids that I had
later in the day seemed to appreciate the new structure
that I was trying to implement better than last year, so
that was good.
I am on an A/B schedule, so I've only seen half of the
kids. I will see a bigger chunk of returning students
tomorrow, so hopefully things will go well with them.
