    Re: Bullying
    Posted by mrsd on 9/04/08

Do NOT allow this. NEVER. NEVER EVER!! I've written before about how
my son became almost suicidal at age 11 from being bullied. How he
barely made it out of high school. And how he dropped out of community
college. He lived one year at home rarely leaving. He wouldn't even go
to family functions - including holidays. He ballooned to almost 300
pounds. About 5 years ago, a friend got him a job driving a delivery
truck. This led to him getting into the plumbers apprenticeship
program. He gained some self-confidence and lost 100 pounds. He's
doing great, though his only friends are his brothers. He is friendly
with people at his job and in his classes, but he never goes out with
    them or socializes with them.

Several years ago, I had a student who suffered from exactly what you
describe. I realized what was going on, and asked her if she'd like to
go to the nurse. She agreed, and I called the office and told them not
to send her back for the rest of the period. Then, I let the class
have it. I told them exactly WHAT their cruel behavior could result
in. I was shaking and in tears of rage and sadness. I have to tell
you, you could have heard a pin drop. And, for the remainder of the
year, they didn't tease her or laugh at her - at least in my class. I
told them that my room was a sanctuary - a place to be safe, and that
if they couldn't respect that, then I would provide their work each
day and they could do it in the ISS room or in the office, but they
wouldn't be allowed in my classroom. Do NOT put up with this. Karen
