Post: Quiz was supposed to be successful!!!
Posted by Stacy 8 NC on 9/01/08
First week of school. Science observations. Did a cool
activity. Lots of observing and logic. Kids engaged. Gave
a great, IMHO, powerpoint on science observation skills.
Kids took 1 slide of notes. Did class/yes, teach/ok.
Thought there was a lot of learning. Gave a notes quiz the
next day as a warm up. Write down the 3 things from the day
before from your notes. The majority of kids did fantastic.
Of course they did! They used their notes and they can
copy!!! But, I got a bunch of garbled stuff about the
scientific method from a few of them. They did not take
notes or chose not to use them, couldn't find them or took
lousy ones. My notes are all jumbled in their heads with
their prior knowledge. Now, I realize I've learned a lot
about them. I know their misconceptions, how well they
write, how careful they are when the take notes and who has
a short term memory.
My dilemma is this. I don't want to discourage them by
giving them a poor grade on this little quiz. But, they
need to know that poor note taking skills is going to be
harmful and they gotta get it together now. I do not have
science books. They must have decent notes.
What would you do?
