Post: Help With Silly 6th Grade Boys!

Posted by 6th Grade Teacher on 9/03/08

I have a small class that is mostly boys. The boys
outnumber the girls 3 to 1 actually and I just found out I
    am getting another boy tomorrow.

A few of my 6th grade boys are downright silly. They do
things like sing in my classroom, dance as they walk back
to their seat, make faces to make each other laugh, etc.

I met with the three of them privately at lunch the other
day and had a little chat, nicely asking for them to be
better role models and reminding them of the classroom
expectations. The behavior stopped that afternoon, but
today it was back again from two of them. They are good
buddies and do not sit together, but because of the way my
tables are set up (in a u formation) they can see each
    other, but not chat easily.

I really am trying hard to be firm and fair, but in a nice
way as my principal said last year I was too strict and
gave too many "commands" to kids and that I needed to
    improve my management.

I took a class this summer and have really learned a lot. I
spent the first 3 days going over expectations and teaching
procedures and feel I am off to a much better start than in
the past few years, but I know my principal is watching
every move and no doubt hanging around in the hall
listening (I actually saw him do this last year one time.)
so I want to do my very best, not only to have the well
managed classroom that he wants to see this year so I
hopefully get tenure, but also just to build up my
confidence that I can manage the class as well as the
veteran teachers do. I have been teaching this grade for 4
years now and spent 3 years before that in primary so I
really feel I should have this down.
