I've heard of marking correct answers with a check or a C, but an X?
Putting an X on correct answers sounds strange/confusing to me. When
did an X come to mean correct?
As for creating extra work, that depends on the purpose. My students
(high school intensive reading) have a "redo" option. So they will go
back and try to correct their answers.
