I have use tribes for many years. It is a very good way to
group students. We use it at our school to build community, as
well as cooperative learning. I divide them this way: I give
each student a three X five note card. They put their name in
the middle of the card and in each corner they put the name of
a person they would like to have in their tribe. It takes a
bit of arranging and rearranging so that each student has at
least one of their choices in their tribe. We actually do
tribes activities. I have a book that lists all kinds of tribe
activities and energizers.
