Me personally...

I have a no zeros allowed policy. You cannot choose a zero. Not an
option. If the assignment was important enough for me to assign to
you, it is important enough for you to do. I will assign lunch and
after school detentions ad nauseum to get the work done. Kids know
it, it is part of my reputation in the school. They test it the
first week of school but after a lunch or two with me, they get
the picture. This is why my kids pass state tests and county
benchmarks and get decent grades. I had 2 out of 120 failures on
my first grade reports this past marking period.
