If children asked to go to the bathroom ONLY because they
have to use the bathroom, we would say yes every time!!! And
please don't imply that we WANT to see kids have an
accident. In fact, why would you leave your child with
someone who you thought was so devious to do such a thing??
As another poster said, there are a multitude of reasons to
question why a child wants to go to the bathroom. I teach
Kindergarten and this is a sensitive issue. I have let five
year olds go alone, down the hall to our bathroom, only for
them to get lost coming out, panic and start screaming. Now
there's a traumatic issue! I have had children hide in the
bathroom. I have had children wander the school, oblivious
to the worry they are causing. Messes, clogging the urinals,
bubbles floating down the hall, harassment from a fifth
grader, yes there are many reasons why we prefer NOT to let
them go to the bathroom alone.
Our children can go in the morning before school starts @ 9
a.m. We take a bathroom break together at 9:30 and 11 before
lunch. We go immediately to the bathroom after lunch and
recess at 12. We go again together at 1:10 and at 2:30
before PE. Even with these opportunities, kids have
accidents, whether it's diarrhea or that they didn't really
go when we went together or they are in centers and don't
want to quit to ask permission to go.
So PLEASE consider the entire situation before you go on the
defensive. And, have you spoken to the teacher?
