As a teacher I do not feel that the bathroom is an issue if
handled correctly. I teach pre-teens and they know from the
1st day of school that if they are sick, or desperately need to
go the bathroom because of something they feel will be
embarrassing, that they should just run without asking. I have
never had my class run out on me to use the bathroom because we
have 3 bathroom breaks during the day so those that feel sick
have already told me so, or have gone home.
On the other hand....
I have seen children ask me to go to the bathroom every time we
do individual work or have to read out loud. I have seen them
feign illness when we will start the math lesson or its time to
hand in homework. These are signs of learning issues that are
being redirected as bathroom issues.
Therefore, I do not believe that a capable teacher is one that
doesn't say "no" to the bathroom. It is very hard to keep
children focused and after a while, we already know the habits
of certain children. We know the children sometimes better
than the parents. So please do not label teachers as bad
because we deny use of the bathroom at that very minute. And I
believe that if you have an issue regarding the bathroom, the
person who you should speak to is to the teacher directly. The
teacher should give you an explanation of their actions, you
may never know what they will say. But don't judge until after
you speak with them.
