This year I have a group of 2nd graders that ask so many questions. Along with the questions, they feel like they have to tell me everything. I tell all the kids at the beginning of the year that if they have questions during work time or group time that they must ask at least 3 friends to get the answer before coming to me to figure it out. I get very frustrated with all the silly things that they feel they need to express. I understand that young kids need help with more things than older kids do. I also truly do love helping my kids with problems that they faced, but my patience is really being tested this year with how my students are asking silly questions and the amount of questions that are being asked. Any tips on how I can redirect these questions and potentially put an end to them.

Don I am going to do the writing and drawing thing. I think this will work with my kids. I always tell them to write down what they are thinking, even if you do not know how to spell words. At this age it's more important to write what the brain is thinking. It is funny to think on how my little second graders ask just as many questions as older kids. ...See More

Kent I haven't noticed that there are any gaps at the high school but I do have a problem with volume. I have two air handling units that sit in two of the corners of my room and pretty much run all day long. This makes for some difficulty having a discussion or answering classroom questions when we are talking in a large group. I keep trying to tell th...See More

Dave We had a discussion in the teacher's lounge yesterday which brought this thread to mind. Don, while your students may still be in a "getting to know you" phase, mine certainly are not, as this is the second year I have had this group. They know me pretty well at this point, so it makes me wonder why I am still getting so many of those silly questio...See More

Josh H. Ah, the silly question. It brings to mind the saying that there are no stupid questions. I don’t completely agree with this statement, but I don’t like how it says it either. I would instead say that there uneducated questions. Or perhaps that there are spontaneous questions that show the asker has put little processing into the subject.

Don I really, truly hate giving into the temptation of giving the answer right away. I usually ask them a return question like, "Is that really a question that 2nd graders should be asking?" Or, " are there other resources that you can get your answers from?" If it is a question that I really do not want to answer at all, I will tell them to ask 3-5 st...See More
