Well, there's our difference of opinion. I do think it's necessary
to know how a car functions to be a car owner. Or, I guess I should
qualify that statement by saying I think it's necessary to know these
things to be a reasonable car owner. It's saved me more money than I
can count. It's also fascinating and a great way to learn about
other topics, or make some money on the side.
Besides, I don't think we should simply teach what kids "need" to
know. They'll figure that stuff out - how to pay bills, show up at
work on time, be a grownup, etc. It's the other stuff that makes
life worth living (figuring out how things work, why they happen,
etc). Anyway, that's only my opinion!
