Re: Computer classes and younger students
    Posted by jBoH on 6/09/08

We have a computer lab with a computer teacher, but the
classroom teacher must remain with the class during the
lessons. In the last 10 years we have changed how we do
things. Currently our computer teacher travels between two
buildings and is scheduled for only 2 days in mine. We are
a K-4 building. To get to everyone we schedule 4 week on 4
week off classes. Each class is for 45 minutes. (1/2 hour
for kinder) Because we are all trying to cover our state
standards we plan together to make our lessons. The
classroom teacher comes with the skill or topic to be taught
and the computer teacher adds the technology spin.
Keyboarding is taught beginning in 2nd. We had started
later, but students developed bad habits. Now for example in
2nd grade we study adjectives, so one lesson was to use
digital cameras to take pictures of things in the building
that could be described by an adjective. Each child was
assigned a letter of the alphabet and thought of adjectives
that began with their letter, then they went with the
teacher or parent volunteer to take pictures. The other
students set up their page and labeled the letter, their
name, they practiced importing the picture, sizing it to fit
and then writing a sentence that used their adjective and
the noun it described. All of this was printed out to put
into a class book. Early finishers worked on creating a
cover for the class book and the best ones were printed and
voted on for every one to see. This took no less then two
classes. We have done animal reports using teacher found
web sites. We have typed stories from the classroom. It
depends on how computer savvy the students in your school
    are, mine are very savvy.
