Kindergarten:
I start at the beginning of the year with an introduction to
the parts of the computer showing them a keyboard, mouse ,
monitor and screen. I ask them what do they know. I am
surprised at times. The following week I take them onto
Starfall www.starfall.com. An awesome site for learning the
alphabet, their sounds and early reading skills. I see my
students 30 minutes once a week and collaborate with
teachers on what themes they are teaching in class. For
example, we ended our unit this year with farm animals. I
took them to 2 sites on farm animals, read and looked at
various farm animals and created a farm animal drawing on
MaxPaint/MaxShow. This software is from Scholastic Keys. I
highly recommend it for K-2. MaxShow is Microsoft
PowerPoint, MaxWrite is Word and MaxCount is Excel. This
software brings the Microsoft Office Suite at a kid's level
with larger icons. My students love it! Also, when we go to
a website I will have the website icons already on the
desktop at each computer. This way all they have to do is
click two times or I will have the site already up. I do
this with 1st grade too at the beginning. :)
1st Grade:
Review starfall for the 1st weeks and then I take them onto
Google and do an introduction to research skills. I do an
introduction to the desktop and how to go on the Internet. I
use KidPix and Scholastic Keys a lot. Also, try Pixie 2
from www.tech4learning.com They have awesome software.
Pixie 2 is like KidPix but better I think.
2nd grade:
Review parts of the computer, desktop and how to go onto the
Internet. My students and I created a PowerPoint
presentation on MaxShow/MaxPaint about the Earth's Layers. A
lot more research on Google. An introduction to typing
skills. I use a FREE site called BBC Dance Mat Typing. The
url is long so I just google it. My students love this
site! For math use www.rainforestmaths.com I also use this
with my upper grade students. There are a lot of fantastic
educational sites out there. When you are in google, type
what you are searching for and put "K12" or "kids" after
it. For example, animal habitats K12.
Other educational games I use just in case students finish
early or we have a break in projects: www.funbrain.com,
BBC rocks and soils (google this one)and ology. If you need
maps go to www.maps101.com. My school has a subscription. I
don't know the prices.
I have a webpage for my students and the community. I have
links my students to go on at home and what projects we are
working on.
