Re: Computer Labs in Elementary Schools
Posted by EMD on 7/02/08
In my district as well as in my previous district, technology
is a special. I am a Technology Integration Specialist. I
see students in grades 1-5 for an hour every other week.
During this time, I introduce students to keyboarding, but my
primary focus is on ways to teach other subjects through
technology. I have some software but often use online
resources. For example, when third grade students are
learning the multiplication facts, I take them to Multiflyer,
where they can practice their facts. I also use Excel to
create a multiplication table with them. With fifth graders,
I have taken students to the Blobs' Guide to Electric
Circuitry. First graders have used Starfall, where they can
practice their reading skills. Throughout the year, I use
technology as another way for students to learn their
curriculum. My website includes all of these links as well
as many more. The lab is also available for teachers to use
with their classes on their own. The advantage to having a
lab is that each student can actively participate in the
learning activity rather than just having to watch on a
single classroom computer.
