Re: Teaching about Computer Hardware WITHOUT Computers

Are you dealing strictly with hardware?
I'm thinking that maybe you could take the disection of the
CPU a bit farther and have them make an art project out of
the parts. I teach in a fine arts school, so there's lots of
that kind of stuff around here.
Maybe have them write and perform a play or an opera about
the hardware involved in the computer - costumes could be
fun!
Maybe make a class wall hanging (just large paper off of a
roll), kinda like they did in the Olympics opening where the
dancers painted? They could use the disected parts to make
imprints or use them as mediums for applying the paint. they
could use the parts and then magazine pictures to make a big
collage....
Have they learned enough about a computer system to be able
to make an intelligent purchase of a new computer? Maybe
bring in some ads for computers and have them analyze them
to choose which one is the most bang for their buck - when
my kids learn about this, I get a great response from
parents!
Maybe they could create some sort of community service
project out of what they've learned, to give back to the
community? They could create a little computer camp for the
younger kids, or prepare a slideshow about what they've
learned for a nursing home?
I'm just thinking out loud there. I haven't actually done
any of that, but maybe I should! I'm also having to teach
computer for a few weeks without computer access.... I so
feel your pain!
good luck!
