Tux Paint is very cool. We got new iMacs which can't run our
older version of KidPix Deluxe and since getting the new
hardware took all our grant money, we couldn't afford to buy
the site license for KidPix.
Anyway, when my students don't follow directions and stay on
task, they have to sit in a chair away from the computers
for a few minutes as a consequence. They usually learn
their lesson pretty quickly. Also, at the beginning of the
lesson I tell them after they have done what I have asked
them to do and we save the work, they are free to explore
the program and do what they want. Most of the students are
happy to comply.
I use the parental control feature of the iMacs, so they are
limited to only the apps I want them to use. By the way,
the Tux Paint program doesn't allow us to name the picts we
have, so I have the kids write their names on the picture so
I can know whose picture it is.
I also turn off the sounds for that program. Some kids get
so involved in making the funny noises that they don't get
any work done.
