I have a document camera with projector and use them daily
with all academic subjects. No more transparencies or overhead
projector. Encourages spontaneity and creativity in lessons.
Every book becomes a big book. Science becomes bigger than
life and math is very interactive. I used these tools as a
substitute teacher and believed in them so much that once in
my own classroom, I used my own money to buy them. Within a
year my fellow staff and administration was sold on and now
all teachers at my school are set up with a document camera
and projector.
You can use a document camera without a projector by plugging
it into a television with an svideo cord. Your laptop
computer will connect to the projector without the need of a
document camera.
Regarding smartboards: expensive cutting edge technology with
a higher learning curve. Does need a projector and precision
mounting/alignment. Very interactive with upfront planning of
lessons. But for now, if I had to choose, I would keep what I
have.
Good Luck!
