Post: Venting...

I'm wondering if anyone else feels this way? Seems like
other teachers feel that what I do in my classes isn't
important. It's bad enough that I have students pulled from
class for band lessons, to meet with the social worker,
speech path, etc. In one class of 15 I have four people out
twice a week for these other activities. I also have
students telling me, 'Mrs. Soandso wants me to come and
make up a test this period.' When I tell them they need to
be in tech class, the students give me a hard time the rest
of the period. I also have a 'conga line' to the bathroom
when one group gets to my class. They've told me their
other teacher told them to wait and use the bathroom during
tech class. Sounds like my time is considered mostly
expendable?
Wait...it gets better! We are negotiating our contract and
I am on the negotiations team. The last contract was
negotiated the summer before I came on board. The Encore
teachers (tech, music, art, and PE) teach an extra class
every day. The last contract gave us $26 a day for this
class. Mind you, this is what a sub gets in our district
for each class they cover. The Encore teachers feel we
should get paid considerably more than a sub. We offer much
more to our students. I brought this up at the negotiations
committee meeting and I couldn't believe the response I
got! They acted like I was lucky to have a position since
Encore classes would be the first to go when money gets
tight. I think if any one of them had to teach an extra
class every day, they wouldn't think $26 a day was enough
compensation.
Just venting....
