I have had an interactive bulletin board with different
brain-teaser type problems on the board (maybe 20 different
problems) that kids could go pick to work on when they needed
the challenge or were finished with an assignment. I would keep
the solutions at my desk in a folder so kids could check to see
if they had done it correctly. I also put "Clip Clue Puzzles"
with the needed colors of paper clips all in a divided
organizer box - my students loved those. Again, the book with
the solutions was kept at my desk, and kids would just come
check their progress with me. If they were incorrect, they
would continue working. The 24 Game is also really great,
because it challenges all students, since there can be more
than one solution to any given problem card. Some kids will
struggle to find one solution, others keep working to see how
many possible solutions they can come up with. Periodically, I
might grant bonus points for solutions, or a homework pass for
2 or more solutions, etc., just to keep it interesting. I would
write the 24 game card numbers on the board, and when students
were done with work, they would begin trying to find solutions.
The same numbers might stay up for a few days if I knew that
many kids had not had time to get to try it. I didn't have
"centers" really for 6th grade - not enough classroom space,
and kind of juvenile for the age..I just presented the
interactive bulletin board at the beginning of the year, or the
table at the back where clip clue puzzles could be found, etc.
