There are many differences between hs and elem counseling and you
need to be prepared to answer questions about those differences. For
your interview I would be ready to- -explain your internship duties and responsibilites
-show sample guidance lessons, units, yearly guidance plans (I see
all 26 classes at my school once a week so guidance is very important
at the elementary level)
-explain schoolwide programs you will implement (Red Ribbon Week,
Character Counts, Bullying Prevention, etc)
- explain how you will run your Comprehensive School Counseling
Program (have your disclosure statement,mission statement and goals,
forms and documents to use in your program [i.e. needs assessment,
referral forms, newsletter layout, parent letters, counseling cards,
etc])
-explain how you plan to work and communicate with teachers and
families
-group and individual counseling techniques and confidentiality These are just ideas off the top of my head that I was asked about.
Most of this stuff I had in my portfolio and was able to actually
pull out and show to the principals. Overall just be ready to explain
how you will run your program and be effective in the environment of
this particular school. Some principals know alot about counseling
and will ask you in depth questions-others might have no idea what
counselors are supposed to do and will just ask general education
questions. Good luck and if you have other questions I will try to
