The students each receive a schedule. They change classes
throughout the day spending about 30 minutes in each fifth
grade classroom. I build their lunch and block time (pe, art,
or music) into the schedule as well. I try to mix the
schedules up as much as possible and not have the kids travel
as a large group. On this day they also go to lunch and their
block time on their own and are allowed to sit anywhere they
want during lunch. In each classroom we have different
activities that give them information about middle school.
The fifth grade teachers each run the different activities. I
serve as the middle school "principal" for the day. I come on
the intercom and let them know when it is time to change
classes and monitor the halls as they are traveling from one
class to another. In one class they practice with combination
locks. In another we have a movie about middle school issues
(although I would like to find a new movie...ours was filmed
in the 80's...you should see the hairstyles). In other
classes we talk about study skills, who you should see at the
middle school for different kinds of problems, etc. I am
looking for some different activities to do in some of the
classes, we have been doing our activites for several years
and the teachers are getting tired of them.
