    Re: Counselor vs. School Psychologist

First check with your state's credentialing as that will
dictate which roles you can perform under each title.
Typically, school counselors are at 1 school (let's say
elementary) and they may do weekly guidance or social skills
lessons in the classroom, do some individual counseling for
minor issues or refer out to a school or community based
therapists for ongoing issues, assist with special ed
meetings, help with discipline and building wide issues (like
scheduling; in some districts they may be more involved with
assessments. A school psychologist may serve in multiple
schools and grade levels (Pre--12th) as a behavioral and
academic consultant, complete evals (IQ, Ach, Bx. Rating
scales) create behavior intervention plans, assist in planning
interventions for students who struggle and monitoring the
effectiveness of those interventions. I am a school psych in
a small district and have the freedom and time to also do
groups --self esteem, anger and social skills for students
with Aspergers or other disabilities. I love working as a
consultant and getting one on one time with students. Most
NCSP programs are 60-75 graduate hours and are usually full
    time. Good luck!
