    Who's being abused? Your post is confusing. In any case,
    one goes ahead with the awards assembly - what does one have
    to do with the other? Then you speak with your principal as
    to what you were told - how to go forward with such a
    situation is the principal's decision. He/she will tell you
    what he/she wants done.

    It's a strange interview question.
