Re: FIRST YEAR

I help coach the first year counselors in my county. One thing I
would suggest is not trying to do everything right away. Don't
try to schedule a ton of class guidance lessons and groups right
away. It is better to do a few things well, than a lot of things
not so well. Get into the classrooms and get to know the teachers
and students first. I would also talk with your new principal and
ask what their expectations are. Another suggestion is to not
make a ton of changes the first year. My first year I met with
the team leaders from each grade and asked them two questions.
What did the previous counselor do that you can't live without,
and what did the previous counselor do that you really didn't
like. I wouldn't change things that they really like during the
first year, get to know the culture of your school first. The
first year is filled with learning all kinds of new things. The
second year was my favorite...then I knew what to expect and how I
wanted to do things.
