I read the other posts and they are right - each school does
things differently. However, many schools do not follow the
law. Counselors do play a role in the IEP process because it
isn't just the students academic needs that are to be
addressed in an IEP. They are supposed to have their
functional and behavior needs met. Most often these are
overlooked because they can be difficult to address and easy
to pass off as a student choice in behavior. Many times the
behavior is a direct action from either the disability or the
method being used to educate.
Read up on the laws. The internet has a vast amount of
information. Then ask about how your school does it and read
more. You then have to decide where you will push for your
students and where you will go along with the way things have
always been done.
