    Re: 8th grade thumb sucker
Posted by: Counselor in NJ on 11/07/09

    Thanks for everyone's suggestions.

After talking to her about this and drawing on her thumb to remind
her of this habit, my 8th grader has stopped sucking her thumb for
now. I am not saying it won't happen again, this seems way to easy
to break a habit like that. However, for right now it is working.

Sara, I don't know how you got out of my post that no one had said
anything to her because I didn't mention it either way. However, my
school isn't that wonderful and kids were making remarks.

Harvey, I don't see how I could let a kid continue to suck their
thumb when they are already in 8th grade. At the last work meeting
you were at, how many adults did you see sucking their thumb?
Unfortunately it is a habit that should be broken and the sooner the
    better.

However, I did feel like this could be habit that may be covering up
a bigger issue and I referred her to out our Counseling and
    Intervention Team.

    Thanks
