Post: Counseling Duties/Pay Scale
Posted by: Miss_Texas on 11/09/09
I am new to the school guidance counselor role...teacher
with 2 MS degrees.
For you fellow Texans, I'm in a 1A district.
At the point of the job offer I was offered an attractive
salary and told I would be paid on the F2 scale, which falls
under the title of "guidance and leadership." It was also
mentioned I may fall under the "administrative" F3 scale b/c
I would have many administrative duties.
One of these is cafeteria duty, another is football game
duty. We play on Sat. nights AND I live over an hour away!!
So literally, Sat is an ENTIRE work day for me by the time I
start driving at 5:30 to be there on time, wait for the game
to end and then drive back and get in at midnight.
Also, I attended a CACREP Nationally recognized university,
which means my training was very extensive. An example of
this is, my internship and practicum took 3 semesters to
complete because I was working full time/single mom and the
hours required were 750. Well in talking to other Texas
school counselors recently, I became aware that most only
had to earn either 100, 150 or 300 hrs. maximum.
I am replacing a counselor (we've had 5 in as many years)
who worked at the prison previously, and was an intern while
working in the district. She had 1 yr more classroom
experience than me, if you dont' include all of my summer
school teaching, but I theoretically have 7x more counseling
experience due to my CACREP training! She was paid $3k more
than me, and once I signed my contract, I was told I would
be getting $7k LESS than originally quoted~and I didnt' know
about all the game duty! The district doesn't pay me fuel or
mileage to travel to the games.
Since arriving in my district, I have created and
implemented 4 yr plans for all students, created and
utilized/updated regularly a website which lay dormant for
at least 5 yrs. and I'm starting to teach and
English/Writer's guild b/c our students aren't getting what
they need from our lone English teacher. They are in no way
prepared for college level English classes. I have also
taken students on a "college days" event which I organized
and none had ever attended and for Red Ribbon Week I did the
unconventional and had an inmate come and speak to our
students, along with the Border Patrol and narcotics agents.
My ESC also invited me to be a guest speaker last week
because they were extremely impressed with all I've done
since I began in August as a first year counselor. I
prepared a 3inch packet of materials/forms that can be
reproduced, I either found or created for distribution. I am
also mailing out my monthly scholarship newsletter to
various students in surrounding districts as well as
correspondence I distribute to our students.
In the meantime I learned that the SUPT hired a private atty
and got her pay raised from $75k to $100k (based on the fact
the district earned a status of Recognized) and many other
"perks", all without a Doctorate!
I recently emailed my SUPT and asked about the salary scale
since I'm on the same one as our lead custodian, and other
things like the CACREP experience and received an email
justifying why my salary is what it is.
Any and all advice would be great.
Obviously I can't post everything here! There's just too much!
Thank you in advance!
