    Personal Opinion :-)

You could have been neon green with purple pokadots and
yellow stripes... Color is not the issue.

They were testing you... and they saw what they could get
away with and so they ran with it.

They were the majority... they buddied up and took hold of
    the reigns.

I teach in a school that is VERY diverse. I see no major
difference between race/color/religion/etc. What I do see a
    difference in is age.

You can read the books and articles posted by the previous
teachers and then generate your own ideas.
But you are probally looking for IDEAS too.

Start on day one with team building activities... show that
YOU are on the team WITH THEM! If you are the minority, you
need to show them how you are the same as them. Find common
ground and build from there. Let them know that you are
human, just like them. AT THE SAME TIME... do NOT let them
feel IN CHARGE. Let them know that you are the boss and
what you say goes. There are NUMEROUS ice breakers out
    there...

You can even make a powerpoint with personal pictures or
just bring in items from home... to let them into your life
    a bit.

Get parents on your side... then if you have to "use
    them"... do it!
If the parents do not respect you then most likely the
    students won't either.
Try getting your former classmates to come back for a visit
and talk about next activities that you did with them last
year. Pick wisely... you want students who will say things
that will help you and your case as well students whose
words will be respected by their younger peers.

If this is truely a problem school wide then maybe a school
assembly is in order... team building thru grade levels
students and teachers on the same teams... maybe competitive
    in some way.

Don't break and resort to yelling. What is the point
    really... ya know?!?1

    BEST OF LUCK!
