I agree. I'd say in fact giving the magazines back was a huge mistake - it
invited the daily confrontation with these girls.

As teachers, well I suppose anybody should learn from their mistakes but
as teachers it's especially important that we do that.

I don't mean to be contradictory but your post offered two positions that
are in contradiction with each other. That's not particularly important
but giving magazines back when they shouldn't be is.
