Re: best books?
"Reluctant Disciplinarian: Advice on Classroom Management From a
Softy who Became (Eventually) a Successful Teacher" by Gary
Rubinstein and Larry Nolte
- I wish I had read this during my first year of teaching!
"Teach Like Your Hair's on Fire: The Methods and Madness Inside
Room 56" by Rafe Esquith
"Conscious Classroom Management: Unlocking the Secrets of Great
Teaching" by Rick Smith
- I just got this book in the mail and haven't read it yet. The
table of contents though look promising...
Books are great, they give you good ideas and encouragement that
you will survive. Be careful about absorbing too much information
though - I just got overwhelmed with all the different classroom
management systems that I couldn't do any of it. That's one reason
that I like that Reluctant Disciplinarian book - it basically says
that before you can implement any "system," you must first know
thyself - find out who you are in the classroom. Then, your
management style can evolve. Of course, there are basic principals
that must be followed, but your personal style of classroom
management will take time and then will need to adapt to different
class personalities along the way.
Just don't feel pressured to follow just one system!
