POST: Alternatives to Birthday Cupcakes

I'm hoping someone here has a great alternative to cupcakes
on children's birthdays. Something that will pacify parents,
and not make them think I'm a meanie. The rule at our school
is that parents send the cupcakes in the morning when the
children arrive at school, that parents do not "attend", and
that it is simple (that is, not a party). But of course, who
follows rules? Only ONE parent did this year. Maybe its just
me, but it drives me crazy when parents have to personally
bring the cupcakes at the time the children are to eat them,
and turn it into a small "event". I just find that it
interrupts the flow of our day.

Also, next year I will have children with several food
allergies, and their parent has to provide special cupcakes
for them. I would prefer to avoid the whole birthday snack
altogether. Last week, I had a child who brought in mini
packs of M&M's to share for his birthday and we munched them
during circle time, which I liked much better, but that
still doesn't solve the food allergy problem.
