I agree that you have been handling the situation very well. I am a
speech pathologist teaching a sped preschool classroom. If this was my
student, I would recommend that the parents look into a speech/language
evaluation if the student is having difficulty with the use (pragmatics)
of language.Things like...Having a give and take conversation, keeping
on topic, initiating converstions, joining in conversations that she did
not start, understanding how to insert herself into a group, answering
questions, following directions.
The evaluation will involve a team. The team will include the parents
and could also include you as her teacher. The team may decide that
additional information may be needed, probably including info from a
medical professional, to rule out autism. But first things first.
Start with the language referral!
