Here are some ideas of social studies subjects that are
appropriate for preschoolers:
Family
Friendship
Classroom Rules
Our Neighborhood
Holidays
Feelings/ Emotions
Native Americans
Transportation
Friends Around the World
All About Me
American Presidents
Other ideas:
-Have a Gradparents Day. Grandparents can read stories to
children or you can have a Grandparent Lunch in your
classroom.
-Do a Multicultural Festival. Each student can bring a dish
from a different country or dress up in that country's
traditional costume. You can also suggest the idea to your
school administrator and make the festival a school wide
event. Each classroom can represent a different country and
students can "travel" around the world (visit each classroom)
using a pretend passport.
Some ideas for the community workers theme:
-Create a post office or a grocery store in the dramatic play
center.
-Take the students on a walk around the neighborhood.
-Visit the local fire station.
-Invite a dentist, police officer, nurse or doctor to your
classroom.
-Teach students about fire safety and dialing 911.
