Re: Anyone still teach The Chocolate War?

I disagree wholeheartedly. I do agree that 1984, and Lord of the Flies (btw, never use etc. when listing the basis of an argument) along with Fahrenheit 451 and Catcher in the Rye are excellent books. I, however, do not see why you would place The Chocolate War underneath them. I don't believe that Orwell, Golding, Bradbury, or Salinger deserve a spot in the halls of education, while Mr. Cormier does not. He was one of the original radicals, writing the truth instead of sugar coated, morally neutral claptrap. I think that Cormier's novels still have a place in the modern classroom. I teach 7th grade ELA in New York, and I think the Chocolate War appeals to the stark reality of my students lives.
