Post: Latino-American Novels for a high school english class

Posted by Annie Jones on 5/02/08

I am a fairly new teacher at an urban school, and while
I'm fairly familiar with African-American literature, my
background in Latino-American literature isn't as strong.
My students are predominantly from Mexico, and then some
are from Central America as well...most Latino-American
novels with which I am familiar are set in Puerto Rican,
Cuban, or Dominican Republic communities here in the
states...and while I love Bodega Dreams and How the Garcia
Girls Lost Their Accents and other such novels, I was
hoping for more texts with characters who share my
students' Mexican and Central American backgrounds...any
suggestions? I love Isabel Allende and Gabriel Garcia
Marquez, but many of my students need texts that are more
accessible; I am familiar with Gary Soto, but most of his
works are for young adults; I really like Always Running,
but want something more current and less gang-focused,
    perhaps... Thanks in advance...
