Those that will snooze do so despite my enthusiasum.
This is a fact. I work in an inner city and many kids are too d---
tired to care about what we're reading and discussing. Many kids
are attentive for the teacher and not for themselves. Only a
handful are intrinsically motivated and inspired by my love for
what we're reading. These are hard facts to swallow--but it's the
truth.
That's why we need to track kids and stop believing all kids are
the same. I have too many levels in one class. The high kids are
bored, the low kids are lost, and the ones in the middle are
attentive. So, I'm teaching to the middle--mediocrity abounds.
We are watering down at all levels--even college I hear. It is a
travesty. We are breeding illiteracy.
