Re: Grades

To Calif: The problem with this system is that it only works if you
have equal numbers of each thing. The way you have it set up, you
now have 4 worksheets = 1 essay (plus a little), so each category
is about equal in terms of the overall grade if that's how your
proportions come out. Missing one test is still more damaging to
the grade than missing a worksheet but each category is still worth
half of the grade. Or something. Of course I teach English too so
could be wrong :)
To answer the OP, I use Gradekeeper and weight my grades. I had a
system I really liked but the principal said we needed a
departmental standard, so next year it'll be 70% "assessments" and
15% each homework and classwork. I like the weighted grades
because it keeps essays and major projects from disappearing into a
sea of homework. It also limits the effects of extra credit, which
I have set up so it can never be more than 1% of the grade. Also,
with an electronic system, it is easy to excuse someone from an
assignment without having to recalculate everything.
