Re: Does Anyone Use Centers in High School?

I haven't tried this in the past, but this year I tried
using centers the first week of school with my sophomores.
I didn't know any of them, and I wasn't sure what they'd
been taught the previous year.
We started off with a basic grammar review, then I split
them randomly into five groups to do a variety of activities
dealing with grammar and dictionary usage. It worked well,
in that I know know what their strengths and weaknesses are
as a class, as well as their individual abilities as far as
staying focused and working with others. I think I learned
a lot more about their individual personalities in a short
amount of time than I would have had I started off the week
leading all activities. For example, I know know which ones
aren't good at asking for help when they need it, and which
ones are good at leading and organizing others.
I like the idea of using centers when I want to do writing
conferences with individuals or small groups later in the
year.
