Are you reading together or are you doing other activities
related to the novel? For example, you could have them read
a short section for homework (which I try to give 4 nights a
week) and then do an in-class project - passage analysis,
alone or in groups; listing and analyzing symbols; research
related to the novel - looking at the historical period or
author biography; read a poem or short story related to the
book and write about it; etc. You can use the book to do
vocabulary - give a word list for each chapter, or have the
kids find the words, and make up your own activities.
I do grammar activities as a preclass assignment. You could
alternate between grammar exercises and journal entries.
